Narasi Perjuangan

My name is Adnil Hanif Abrar and I have graduated from Global Sevilla Pulo Mas. I have been accepted to the prestigious school – UI – in the international medical faculty through talentscouting. Ive always had this dream as I have met so many graduates and heard their exciting and successful stories since they touched the university. Furthermore, I delved deep into the internet to find more information about the uni itself and their visions, missions, and beliefs.

FKUI takes pride for being the place of knowledge. Such so through the curriculum and campus activities they can educate people until they become the best[1]. This can be seen as their alumnus has spread throughout Indonesia and even other countries to use the skills that they learned[2].

My grind to even start the journey in UI has been quite thrilling and lengthy, throughout my higher secondary years have been filled with a lot of academic and as well non-academical activities. From grades 7 until 10 – which was during quarantine – I wasn’t focused on what was the next step in my life, school was still a breeze, and video games and girls were the only things in my mind at the time. All I had to do was put minimal effort into school so at least I could get higher-than-average grades. Though when we started going back to school, I saw my peers already maturing and even learning at a faster pace than me. Additionally, the school was becoming harder, and more effort had to be put in for me to maintain the scores I needed so at least I could even be considered to go to FKUI. I started going back into the groove and waking up from my false sense of reality. These include going to BTA 8, an online (at the time) education institute that teaches its student the national curriculum that the SIMAK, UTBK SNBP, and PPKB use[3]. As my school offers an international program this was crucial for me to adapt to the difference in learning styles. I continued in this extra-curricular program throughout my 11th grade and early 12th and decided to continue with my test studies autodidact to have more focus on my school exams too. During this time, I also had several non-school activities such as OSIS. In my school committee, we held an interschool online competition which held singing, dance, and video-game competitions. I took part in organizing the contestants, editing the videos, and designing the stream’s scenes and had a fun time with my little team. Though I must admit I have some flaws too as I am also human. My time management skills aren’t the best at times, such as allotting time to work and study rather than hanging out with my friends. Furthermore, I also have difficulty paying attention and would be lazier than my peers. Though in this field I mustn’t be a child anymore I have strong motivations and the will to be disciplined, I have started journaling and taking timetables of my duties and other activities to keep my life in order. Additionally, I have been using techniques such as the Pomodoro timer to increase productivity and stop disassociating from what truly matters.

The fun was over, I had to focus on my journey into FKUI, I started practicing for the first way to get into FKUI; which was the Talentscouting program. I did some preparations by researching what questions they might ask in the interview, I even sacrificed my me-time on watching the news and getting to know the problems the world faces. I also had coaching with one of my teachers at school; Sir Ali, on how I would answer the questions. We would go through medicine, human rights, general medicines, diseases, and even how a human’s mental state can affect them. A few days go by and the day of the interview came up. I can still remember the feeling of anxiety and fear crawling up my spine as I was being driven there by my parents. Once I arrived and settled, I was brought into the hallways with a bunch of my potential peers. The interview consisted of six questions behind six doors that we were supposed to answer in a few minutes, with a minute rest in between. The game was the faster intellect, speed, and mastery of the English language. I remember one of the questions telling us to apologize to a woman whose cat was just killed. Another one with weighing between family and work and also one about my motivations and my plan for the future. I worked on my PPKB UTBK and SIMAK studies harder and more efficiently after the interview as I had no more time to waste, I wasn’t very confident in passing TS, though, after a couple of weeks, I had my results. I was passed by the board. Thinking back on the interview though I realized that these questions weren’t about how smart a person had to be, it was testing us if we were ideal candidates to be a medical professional.

The term “ideal doctor” is pretty general so what exactly defines an ideal doctor? The Cambridge Dictionary defines ideal as the the best possible, so in this context an ideal doctor should be the best possible person to be a medical professional[4]. I believe some criteria can be determined by analyzing the questions UI decided to throw at me at the interview, which are: Empathy, Communicability, Decision-Maker, and also Assured. These four abilities come hand-to-hand in providing the best care any patient needs.

Empathy is a core staple of the human instinct that is built onto our biology that seperates us from animals. If a patient suffers from a loss of hearing due to a broken eardrum, an unemphatic doctor might question why hes still nagging as they had already sutured the bleeding tissues and saved the man from a nasty infection, though an empathetic one would soothe the patient down telling him that he will still be okay and there are could be other medical or non-medical treatments to fix or compensate his absent sense. The ability to determine your own behavior to suit another person’s needs is important in becoming an ideal doctor as it creates a more patient-centered care and fosters effective doctor-patient relationships[5].

Communicability is also an important factor in determining whether a person is valid to be classified as an ideal doctor. it is important to actively listen to patients, consider their opinions, and answer their inquiries truthfully. Patients should be provided with the necessary information in a manner that is easy for them to comprehend. It is also essential to accommodate patients' language and communication requirements whenever possible. Additionally, ideal doctors should show empathy towards the patient's loved ones, offering them information and emotional support. Additonally, healthcare workers must be readily available to patients and colleagues who seek information, advice, or assistance while on duty. Lastly, this ties back into empathy as a doctor that aren’t able to communicate clearly wouldn’t be able to show the empathy they possess[6]. Though how would a doctor exactly know which treatment is best for a given patient?

The importance of effective decision-making in providing high-quality patient care. The significance of considering ethical and legal aspects when making decisions could mean the survival or loss of a patient’s life or working organs. When making a decision critical-thinking should always be applied, by removing emotion from our deductions doctors are able to evaluate evidence and remove personal attitude and bias[8]. Sometimes there would be a sacrifice for the greater good and a doctor that isn’t able to recognize and go through the tough decisions aren’t suited to become a healthcare worker and aren’t considered to be an ideal doctor. There are several strategies for improving decision-making skills, including seeking mentorship, using decision-making frameworks, and engaging in continuous professional development.

Assurance which could be defined as the feeling of confidence with a person’s abilities[9] is also an essential perk of becoming a doctor. Though there is a difference between being egoistic and assurance. Egoistic is believing in the impossible, making assurances without actually using critical thinking to come up with the conclusions. This can cause a major problem in the workplace. Being insecure and not believing in the duties you can perform is also problematic, imagine a doctor that could have saved a patient though he was too insecure and performing the required operations, eventhough he might be perfect in practice the stress that avalanches him as he performs his duties could be the difference between a success and a complication.

entering the world of medicine was not only my bone-breaking efforts and support from friends and family, but a blessing by Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala himself. It was a miracle, and I do not wish to disappoint. Analyzing what FKUI would want a doctor to be im ready to do what it takes to be one of the greats.
